Historical: The construction of the Flavian amphitheatre, better known throughout the world as the Colosseum, began in 72 A.D. under Emperor Vespasian and ended only eight years later under Emperor Titus. Built in travertine and tuff it is the largest amphitheater in the world and is considered the symbol of the majesty of Imperial Rome. The Colosseum hosted the favorite shows of Roman society such as animal struggles, often exotic and gladiator fights.
