Historical: The construction of the Flavian amphitheatre, better known throughout the world as the Colosseum, began in 72 A.D. under Emperor Vespasian and ended only eight years later under Emperor Titus. Built in travertine and tuff it is the largest amphitheater in the world and is considered the symbol of the majesty of Imperial Rome. The Colosseum hosted the favorite shows of Roman society such as animal struggles, often exotic and gladiator fights. The Colosseum could accommodate up to 80,000 spectators who could quickly flow through a modern conception of the structures, at the end of the shows. Special fabric covers called "velarium", operated by expert sailors from the fleet of Capo Miseno, also guaranteed effective protection from the sun from bad weather. Today the Colosseum is one of the most visited monuments in the World and the undisputed symbol of Rome and Italy.
