CLASSIC RAILROAD ARCHIVES: VOLUME 1

This program contains  seven vintage  railroad  movies.

1. "PROGRESS ON THE RAILS"

Produced by the P.R.R. about 1954, this film describes technical progress in railroading including cab signals, speed control, radio phones, dragging equipment detector:, tamping and ballast cleaning, Sperry rail defect detection, yard facilities, new equipment and the first reservations computer. Also included are cab shots, passing trains and views of Penn Station in New York City and Union Station in Washington, D.C.

2. "FAST  FREIGHT"

Produced by the Association of American Railroads about l954 this film describes the operation of a freight train between Potomac Yard and Chicago, IL. Each crew member is introduced and his duties explained from sign up to the end of the run. Classification, car retarders, train inspection, train make-up, early "Piggy Backs", over the road operation, pick-ups and re-icing are explained before arriving at Chicago.   BLACK AND WHITE - SOUND - 15 MINUTES

3. "COAST TO COAST IN 48 HOURS"

Starting at Penn Station, N.Y. and ending in Los Angeles, CA, this 1924 film, produced by the Pennsy, describes the first coast to coast air-train operation in the United States with many train and plane shots (including aerial views).
